Coaching & Mentoring are broadly speaking developmental tools, with numerous definitions existing, some of my favourites are listed below:-

'A coach is someone who tells you what you don't want to hear, who has you see what you don't want to see, so you can be who you have always known you could be". Tom Landry

"Coaching is the art of facilitating the performance, learning and development of another". Myles Downey

"Coaching enables you to focus your thoughts, actions and time so that you will be able to increase the quality of your life". Edward Fisher

"Mentoring is a supportive learning relationship between a caring individual who shares knowledge, experience and wisdom with another individual who is ready and willing to benefit from this exchange to enrich their professional journey". Suzanne Faure

"Mentoring involves primarily listening with empathy, sharing experience (usually mutual), professional friendship, developing insight through reflection, being a sounding board, encouraging". David Clutterbuck

"The purpose of mentoring is always to help the mentee change something - to improve their performance, to develop their leadership qualities , to develop their partnership skills, to realise their vision, or whatever, This movement from where they are, ('here') to where they want to be ('there'). Mike Turner
